Healing Herbs

My grandmother Ana the matriarch of our family born in 1906, was a strong, independent and positive woman who survived two world wars and buried two of her five children due to illnesses that changed her life forever.

In her time, being a young mother was tough and medical advice was out of reach and costly, which later led her to rely on the only thing she had, the inherited wisdom of her ancestors on natural healing.

The knowledge she had was passed down from  generations of women with a deep understanding of healing plants that came from the need to protect and nurture their loved ones the only way they knew how.

Her healing advice evoked a sense of security and belonging, a transformation of the soul knowing her words came from a wise and loving place.

Her garden was a sanctuary of beautiful booms and herbs with scents that have stayed with me to this day.

The home was an array of drying herbs hanging on the veranda and the kitchen, with the scent of freshly made coffee and peppermint tea always warm sitting on the wooden stove in the enamelled tea pot. The wooden hutch buffet was filled with books and glass jars with her tea blends.

My grandmother’s collection of natural remedy journals was passed down to my oldest aunty who cherished the legacy until her last day.

Our healing herbs weekly stories will take you on a journey of discovery on the benefits of the amazing plants we take for granted.
