Healing Herbs
My grandmother Ana the matriarch of our family who was born in 1906, was a strong, independent and positive woman who survived two world wars and buried two of her five children due to illnesses that changed her life forever. In her time, being a young mother was tough and medical advice was out of reach and costly, which later led her to rely on the only thing she had, the inherited wisdom of her ancestors on natural healing. The knowledge she had was passed down from generations of women with a deep understanding of healing plants that came from the need to protect and nurture their loved ones the only way they knew how.
Her healing advice evoked a sense of security and belonging, a transformation of the soul knowing her words came from a wise and loving place.
Her garden was a sanctuary of beautiful booms and herbs with scents that have stayed with me to this day.
The home was an array of drying herbs hanging on the veranda and the kitchen, with the scent of freshly made coffee and peppermint tea always warm sitting on the wooden stove in the enamelled tea pot. The wooden hutch buffet was filled with books and glass jars with her tea blends.
My grandmother’s collection of natural remedy journals was passed down to my oldest aunty who cherished the legacy until her last day.
Our healing herbs weekly stories will take you on a journey of discovery on the benefits of the amazing plants we take for granted.
Return to Nature
Here in the southern hemisphere spring has welcomed in warmer weather and a delightful array of blooming flowers for us to enjoy. The outdoors is practically calling for us to explore it. On a mid morning walk you can catch the delightfully sweet smell of wisteria, with its violet hued blooms, honey bees dancing among them. A sense of calm overcomes you as you’re hugged by a warm breeze, it sends a message directly to your central nervous system: relax.
This kind of experience, connectedness, not only grounds your energy it also elevates stress, lowers blood cortisol levels, your pulse and blood pressure. Spring gives birth to new possibilities outside as well as in. When we connect to the natural rhythms of nature we can be inspired in our own lives: to grow, to change, to be reborn.
Taking the practice further a lot of people like to walk barefoot, sole to soil. The energy of the earth will move through you like a current, anchoring your energy and realigning it with the earths. It’s a great way to reduce anxiety and to clear our minds that are so often polluted by the debris of everyday stresses. Being overly stimulated by our work, relationships, kids, projects, meetings, deadlines and so on can take a toll on our health and learning to priorities time out, to reconnect to nature, does a whole lot of good to undo the mental mess we so often get caught in. So take the time to experience what nature has to offer, trust me, you won’t regret it.
